Key Insights About Being an Entrepreneur in the Birthing Space

As an experienced doula and entrepreneur, I've navigated the delicate balance between passion and practicality. My journey has taught me invaluable lessons about managing a business that is deeply intertwined with human emotions and relationships. In a recent interview with professional coach Erline Hertilien (follow her on Instagram @erlinethecoach!), I shared my experience-based insights, three in particular that have shaped my approach to entrepreneurship in the birthing space.
1. Boundaries: Protect Your Energy and Time
One of the most crucial lessons I've learned is the importance of setting and maintaining boundaries. As someone who deeply cares about others – a quality others in caring professions hold – it's easy to overextend myself. Early in my career, I often blurred the lines between work and personal time, which led to burnout. Now, I firmly adhere to my boundaries: when I’m on, I’m fully present, and when I’m off, I disconnect completely. This clear separation allows me to recharge and be my best self for my clients and team members.
Saying no can be challenging, especially when you're passionate about helping others. However, I’ve realized that it’s kinder to decline when I can’t give my all. This approach ensures that when I am available, I can fully dedicate my time and energy to those I serve. For any entrepreneur, especially in a field as demanding as birthwork, setting boundaries is not just beneficial—it’s essential for long-term success.
2. Relationships Are the Building Blocks of Business Growth
In the birthing space, relationships are everything. I built my business, Sweet Bee, on the foundation of genuine connections. Although I am an introvert, my love of people drives me to make a point to engage with people wherever I go, whether it’s at a grocery store or a professional summit. These organic interactions often lead to meaningful professional relationships.
Networking within the community has led to key professional milestones that have enhanced my doula practice. For instance, recently being a panelist at the Cade Foundation’s maternal reproductive summit allowed me to meet potential clients and collaborators. These types of connections have led to me being a founding member and educator with the National Black Doula Association (NBDA), which helps me advance this industry that I care so much about. For entrepreneurs, cultivating and nurturing relationships can be a powerful catalyst for growth.
3. The Importance of Personnel Choices: Hiring Slowly, Firing Quickly
As my business expanded, so did my team, bringing new challenges. One of the most significant lessons I've learned is the importance of personnel choices. Hiring the right people is critical, and I've adopted the mantra of "hire slowly, fire quickly." This means taking the time to ensure a good fit during the hiring process and making decisions in favor of the integrity and harmony of the team. I implement a thorough onboarding process, including an extensive application, a consultation, and a three-month probationary period. Understanding that mistakes are part of the process, I also place a high value on accountability and willingness to improve. For any entrepreneur, having a team that aligns with your values and vision is fundamental to achieving sustainable success. I’m fortunate to have found my people!

By setting firm boundaries, valuing relationships, and making thoughtful personnel choices, I've been able to grow Sweet Bee into a thriving business.
