Demystifying Placenta Encapsulation

Placenta encapsulation—it’s definitely a hot topic! Some moms rave about it, while others are a bit more skeptical. Either way, it’s always helpful to know what the buzz is about. Let’s take a look at the potential benefits and how the whole process works. Who knows? It might even be something you want to explore on your own postpartum journey!

The Benefits of Placenta Encapsulation for New Moms

After having a baby, your body is going through so many changes, and placenta encapsulation could be a way to help smooth out some of the bumps along the way. Many moms believe that taking placenta capsules provides some extra support during those early postpartum weeks. So, what are the potential benefits?

  • Energy boost: Newborns can zap your energy, and some moms say placenta capsules give them the pick-me-up they need.

  • Breastfeeding support: Some women notice an improvement in their milk supply.

  • Postpartum mood: The hormones in the placenta are believed to help stabilize emotions and lessen the "baby blues."

  • Recovery: Overall, it’s about helping your body recover from the huge task of giving birth.

While the science is still evolving, plenty of moms have shared their positive experiences, and if it feels like the right choice for you, it might be worth a try!

The Process: How Does Placenta Encapsulation Work?

Now that we’ve talked about the possible benefits, let’s break down the process. Here’s how we at Sweet Bee Services transform your placenta into conveniently-sized capsules you can take as part of your postpartum care:

  1. Handling with Care
First things first: safety! We make sure your placenta hasn’t been out of your body for more than four hours and that it’s stayed in your possession before it gets to us. Then, we set up a sterile environment, using OSHA-certified procedures to ensure everything stays clean and safe.

  2. A Good Cleaning
The placenta gets a thorough rinse with water, followed by a bath in apple cider vinegar (or regular vinegar, depending on preference). It’s all about making sure it's clean and ready for the next steps.

  3. Steaming with Lemon & Ginger
We steam the placenta with lemon and ginger, which not only helps sterilize it but also cuts down on any strong smells. After a nice, aromatic steam, we slice it into thin pieces.

  4. Dehydration Time
Next, we place the placenta slices into a dehydrator. This step can take anywhere from 12 to 18 hours, depending on the size of the placenta. Once the pieces are dried enough to snap cleanly, they’re ready for the final step.

  5. Grinding & Filling the Capsules
We grind the dehydrated placenta into a very fine powder and carefully fill vegan capsules. These capsules are typically size 00 or 000, depending on what’s easiest for you to swallow. Most clients receive between 150 to 200 capsules, depending on the size of the placenta.

While placenta encapsulation isn’t for everyone, many of our clients appreciate having this option as part of their postpartum care. For some, it offers peace of mind and a sense of control during a time when everything can feel a bit overwhelming. Of course, it’s always important to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure it’s the right choice for you.

At Sweet Bee Services, our goal is to offer options that feel supportive and holistic, and placenta encapsulation is just one way we aim to meet families where they are in their postpartum journey.
