How to Make a Padsicle for Postpartum Relief

What is a Padsicle?

A padsicle is a combination of the words "pad" and "popsicle." It’s essentially a postpartum pad infused with healing ingredients, then frozen for a cooling, soothing effect. Padsicles help reduce swelling, ease discomfort, and provide some much-needed relief during the postpartum healing process.

What You’ll Need:

  • Postpartum pads

  • Witch hazel (alcohol-free)

  • Anti-inflammatory Essential oils (like lavender or tea tree)

  • Gallon-sized Ziploc bags

Step-by-Step: How to Make a Padsicle

  1. Prepare Your Pad
    Start by opening up a clean pad with wings. You’ll want to keep the wrapper on hand so you can fold the pad back up later.

  2. Apply Witch Hazel
    Witch hazel is great for reducing inflammation and soothing the skin. Apply a generous amount, focusing on the middle of the pad.

  3. Add Essential Oils
    Add 3-5 drops of essential oil to the pad for extra healing properties and a calming scent. Lavender is a wonderful choice for soothing skin and promoting relaxation. You can adjust to your preference.

  4. Fold the Pad
    Once your ingredients are in place, fold the pad back up neatly, just as it was when you took it out of the package.

  5. Freeze the Pads
    Place the prepared pads into a gallon-sized Ziploc bag. You can fit about 5-10 pads per bag, depending on the size. Squeeze out the excess air, seal the bag, and place it in the freezer.

How to Use a Padsicle:

When you're ready to use your padsicle, take it out of the freezer about 3–5 minutes before applying it, just to let it thaw slightly. Once softened, place it inside your postpartum underwear, positioning the absorbent, ingredient-covered area where it will provide the most relief.

Padsicles are typically used to cool and soothe the perineal area (from the labia majora to the anal area). The cooling sensation can be incredibly comforting and helps promote healing.
