Why Postpartum Doulas Are Vital for New Parents – and How You Can Expand Access

Our culture tends to pour attention into growing families before and during birth and then disappear when the baby arrives. However, anyone who’s lived through, or observed, the “fourth trimester: knows: postpartum is its own significant journey, full of emotional fluctuations, physical recovery, and countless new experiences.

At Sweet Bee Services, we believe that support should not end at delivery. In fact, that’s exactly when many families need it most. That’s why we champion the role of the postpartum doula—and why we’re building Baltimore’s first postpartum wellness retreat to make sure that care is accessible to all.

What Does a Postpartum Doula Do?

A postpartum doula is professionally trained to support families after birth—through emotional care, newborn guidance, and help around the home. We step in with compassion, practical knowledge, and the ability to recognize what’s needed, even before you say it. We’re there to nurture the nurturer—helping parents settle into their new rhythm with gentle guidance and steady support.

The Real Benefits

Let’s talk about what this support actually looks like in the day-to-day:

  • Emotional Support: We’re there to listen. We help name feelings, reassure parents through the hard parts, and gently flag signs of mood disorders when they show up. Our presence reminds families: you’re not doing this alone.

  • Physical & Household Support: From folding laundry to preparing a snack plate or guiding baby’s first bath—we ease the day-to-day so that you can rest, heal, and bond with your baby.

  • Family Integration: We help partners build confidence, support older siblings through the transition, and create routines that work for your household.

  • Evidence-Based Results: Postpartum doula support has been linked to better sleep, higher breastfeeding success, and lower rates of postpartum depression. We’ve seen it firsthand—families who feel held do better.

Postpartum Support Isn’t Just Nice to Have—It’s Lifesaving

We cannot talk about postpartum care without talking about maternal mortality. The truth is: the U.S. is in crisis, and postpartum is where far too many lives are lost.

According to the CDC, a large share of pregnancy-related deaths occur postpartum:

  • 52% of all pregnancy-related deaths occur between 7 days and 1 year postpartum

  • 25% happen on the day of birth or within the first week

These numbers are unacceptable. And they’re not just statistics—they’re stories of families forever changed. But here’s the good news: postpartum support is part of the solution.

By investing in trauma-informed, culturally competent care during the postpartum period, we can detect problems early, provide vital mental health support, and reduce the burden on new parents—especially in communities that are most impacted by these disparities. We say it all the time: birth is just the beginning. Hiring postpartum support should be part of every birth plan—not an afterthought. You deserve care during this wonderful but vulnerable time.
